How to Maintain a Good Relationship

Relationships all have their ups and downs. There are the good times and the more difficult ones, the times you laugh together and the ones you cry together. I can offer a few ideas that can help you recover your relationship and get that "spark" back that you used to have. All you need to know are the fundamentals of keeping romance and life in your relationship and it will thrive for years to come. If you want that long term relationship to last, and you have heart and desire to make it happen, your in the right spot. If you can dream it, you can achieve it. After a while you will be able to deal with anything you might encounter in your relationship.

Step1:

Don't try and be somebody your not. Be yourself. The person you are with loves you for who you are, not who you are trying to be. Relax. Don't try and be Romeo or you are going to find it hard to keep up with your role as an actor, making the relationship more complex than it needs to be. If you like bike riding, ride bikes, if you like Frank Sinatra, listen to "Love And Marriage". It is just that simple. Be you.

Step2:

Don't make your relationship a stressful thing. Its not a job, its a pleasure. Their is no better feeling that the feeling of being loved. So enjoy it. Try to minimize fighting by not getting upset over every little thing. Think about it for a second and ask yourself "Is this really worth fighting over?", and chances are, its not. You would be surprised how easy it will be to brush things off after you start doing it for a little while. Life is good, cherish every moment with your partner as if it was your last. Laugh, smile, and indulge yourself in the passion of your relationship.

Step3:

Express yourself, and how you feel. Try and say at least one thing nice to your partner every day. If you think they look good, tell them. Honestly, who doesn't like a compliment? Just remember. You have to give to receive. You are more likely to get a compliment if you give them one. You will be surprised how much a compliment means to your partner. It shows them that you love them and still feel the same about them.

Step4:

Say "I love you", but don't overkill on it. Those three words are very powerful and can have a major impact on your relationship. Not too easy to say when the right time is to say "I love you" to your partner, but you should know when the time is right. Don't just say it for the hell of it, every time you say it you should mean it. In retrospective, don't say it too much. Once it has lost its meaning, its almost impossible to get back. When "I love you" begins to sound the same as "hello" or "goodbye", you know you are burning it out. Just let it flow, give the three magic words their spotlight when its due.

Step5:

Honesty is one of the most important things. Their should be no reason to lie to your partner, so why do it? Tell each other everything. If anything, it will produce conversation. This includes trust. If you can trust one another, your relationship will be impeccable. Spend less time worrying about what your partner is doing and more about what you are going to do when you two are together. Don't ask them what they are doing every five minutes when you aren't together, just ask occasionally, or better yet, save it for your dinner time conversation together.
